East Kalimantan to send 100 student to study in Russia

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- East Kalimantan will send 100 students to Russia this year to study infrastructure technology especially in the transport sector.

"In 2014, Russia will give scholarships for 100 students from East Kalimantan in connection with the plan to build rail track in that province, Indonesian Ambassador to Russia Djauhari Oratmangun said.

A Russian company has been awarded the contract to build the first railway track in Kalimantan.

A first group of 50 students would depart in May to study Russian language before they start studying technology at university in August, 2014, Djauhari said here on Sunday.

"East Kalimantan Governor Awang Farouk Ishak has a target to send 300 students in 1-2 years to Russia all to be financed by the regional administration," Djauhari said.

He said Awang Farouk already visited Russia where he signed memorandums of understanding with a number of universities.

He described as interesting relationships between Indonesians and Russian people especially in cultures.

There are seven universities in Russia providing study in Indonesian literature, he said.

"At the Indonesian embassy we also open a free course on Bahasa Indonesia for Russians," he said.

He said currently there are 132 Indonesian students in Russia.

Earlier Education Minister M. Nuh provided additional scholarships for the 132 students as a pioneer students.

"So far they are given scholarship to stay and we provide pocket money and M. Nuh gave the pioneer scholarship," he said.
