REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- PT Pertamina will put into operation a world's largest most sophisticated liquified petroleum gas (LPG) tanker with a capacity of 50,000 tons.

Pertamina Gas I is the type of "very large gas carrier" (VLGC), Hanung Budya, the marketing director of the state energy company said.

Pertamina Gas I, to start operation on Wednesday, would strengthen the fleet of the company, Hanung said here on Tuesday.

He said the tanker would contribute to greater efficiency and faster distribution of LPG especially to eastern regions of the country.

Pertamina President Karen Agustiawan would officially commission the tanker at Pulau Sambu, Riau Islands together with other downstream oil and gas projects.

Hanung said Pertamina Gas I is a multifunction ship as it serves not only as a carrier but it also holds stock with floating unloading facility to move LPG to smaller vessels for distribution to various areas.

The VLGC, 225.81 metyer long, 36.6 meter wide with dead weight of 54,433 tons was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co of South Korea.
