27 reported safe after boat capsizes in Mahakam River

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SAMARINDA -- Twenty-seven people aboard a boat that capsized in the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan's Kutai Kartanegara district were rescued on Saturday evening.

"All the passengers, including a crew member and skipper, were rescued. Only 13 motorcycles sank in the Mahakam River," Head of the Kutai Kartanegara District Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD) Darmansyah said.

According to witnesses, the ferry boat "Nur Nadila" overturned because it was overloaded, Darmansyah said.

Spokesman of the East Kalimantan provincial police Snr. Comr. Fajar Setiawan said the police are currently investigating the cause of the accident.

"The ferry boat capsized about 50 meters from the pier. All passengers, including crew members, have been rescued," he said.
