REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Rice stocks at the Cipinang wholesale market in East Jakarta are still enough for 11 to 12 days despite declining supplies due to flooding, Deputy Trade Minister Bayu Krisnamurthi said.

"The transportation of rice has been disrupted due to floods in Karawang and Cirebon. As a result, supplies fall to 2,100 tons from 3,000 tons per day. But overall, stocks are still safe," he said at a discussion with journalists here on Monday.

The Cipinang market currently held an estimated 32,700 tons of rice. The stocks were expected to increase by 2,000 tons in the next few days so that rice supplies in and around Jakarta would be safe, he said.

"Right now the rice stocks are still safe as there has been no significant rice price hike," Bayu said.

Floods cut off a section of road connecting Indramayu to Subang districts in West Java, leading to a delay in rice supplies to Jakarta.

The prices of basic necessities had increased by a range of 1-3 percent but overall, they were still stable, he said.

"What we have to pay attention are horticulture and fishery commodities which are hit the hardest by the weather," he said.

He said the Trade Ministry was monitoring commodity prices in 10 Indonesian cities.

In Surabaya, the prices of horticulture products have increased by 3 to 5 percent because of flooding which disrupted supplies. Meanwhile, several markets in Manado which bore the brunt of the recent floods and landslides have begun operating, he said.

In Medan, the commodity prices rose by less than 7 percent due to the eruption of Mount Sinabung which disrupted the supply of horticulture commodities, he said.

The recent flooding struck not only Jakarta but also the rest of Java's northern coastal areas, such as Tangerang, Kerawang, Subang, Indramayu, Pemalang, Pekalongan, and Semarang.
