JK: We are in dire need of clean water

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANADO -- Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Jusuf Kalla paid a visit on Monday to people affected by Wednesday's flash floods, which struck several areas of North Sulawesi province.

"We are in dire need of clean water," Jusuf Kalla, who was the Indonesian vice president in 2004-2009 period, stated.

During the visit, Kalla's entourage, among other things, visited the evacuation sites in Tikala Ares village, met residents, as well as

evacuees, in the muddy alley in Minahasa Dendengan Luar area.

Flash floods, which struck several parts of North Sulawesi province starting Wednesday, January 15, caused losses of some Rp1.871 trillion and left at least 18 people dead.

The flash floods and landslides, triggered by torrential rains in the past few days, had overwhelmed a number of areas in North Sulawesi, including the cities of Manado, Tomohon, the districts of Minahasa, North Minahasa, Southeast Minahasa, and the islands of Sangihe and Sitaro.

According to North Sulawesi governor Sinyo H Sarundajang in Manado on Saturday, Jan 18, the severe floods just in Manado destroyed 40 locations.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) stated that 80,331 residents have been displaced by flash floods and landslides in North Sulawesi.

In addition, the number of houses which were washed away by the floods has reached 565 houses located in the sub-districts of Sario with 23 houses, Singkil lost 143 houses, Tikala 35 houses, Paal Dua 88 and Wanea 276 houses.

The flooding was caused by the overflowing of four major rivers in Manado, including the Tondano Sawangan River, Sario River, Kite Malayang River and Bailang River.
