Bosowa to build a nickel smelter worth 432.7 million USD

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Local diversified business group, Bosowa Corporation will build a nickel smelter in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Company has prepared investment of 432.7 million USD.

Bosowa CEO, Erwin Aksa said that this investment as an effort to support the implementation of Law No. 4/2009 on Mineral and Coal. Company will start to build the new plant in the first half of 2014 through its subsidiary, PT Bosowa Industri FeNi, while the groundbreaking will be started on March.

"This is a positive response of Bosowa to implement the Mining Law," Aksa said recently.

The Makassar based conglomerate expected the nickel smelter will produce 25 thousand tonnes of nickel per year. Nickel in Indonesia potentially reaches 3.2 billion tonnes based on data of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The largest nickel reserves are in eastern Indonesia, like Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua reaching 1.2 billion tonnes.

Company will build the plant on land area of 60 hectares in Jeneponto supported by steam power plant with capacity of 2x125 megawatt. Bosowa has mine land concessions of one thousand hectares in Konawe, Southeast Sulawesi. The smelter construction is expected for three years.

The presence of processing industry in eastern Indonesia will increase the capacity of region's economy. It is also going to absorb a lot of local workers.
