REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, RAMALLAH -- Hundreds of Palestinians on Saturday demonstrated in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip calling for putting an end to a siege imposed by the Syrian army on a Palestinian refugee camp near Damascus.

The Yarmouk refugee camp came under siege months ago after Syrian opposition fighters took positions inside it. Since then, at least 15 people died of hunger, according to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Sami Abu Zuhri, a spokesperson for Islamic Hamas movement which controls Gaza, called for keeping the Palestinian refugee camps in Syria away from the civil war in the country.

On Friday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on the warring parties in Syria to facilitate the delivery of food and aid into the refugee camp "to save the life of the people there."

About 200,000 Palestinians used to live in the Yarmouk refugee camp, but the number sharply declined as thousands escaped the fighting over the past three years.
