REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TRENGGALEK -- Floods triggered by heavy rains struck six villages in East Java's southern coastal district of Trenggalek on Wednesday.

Hundreds of houses were flooded apparently because a number of flood control barriers collapsed, secretary of the Trenggalek district disaster mitigation body (BPBD) Suprapto said.

The six villages were Nglebeng, Kertosono, Wonocoyo and Bodag in Panggul sub-district, and Tamanan and Kelutan in Trenggalek sub-district.

Floods began to hit the villages in Panggul sub-district at 08.30 a.m. local time, with water levels reaching more than one meters, he said.

Because of the floods the economic activities of many local residents were paralyzed, he said.

He said the floods which struck the district were caused by the overflowing of a number of rivers. The floods were exacerbated by high tides.

The heavy rains also caused a landslide in Pule sub-district which caused a house to collapse.
