Yogyakarta on alert status of flood and landslide

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA - Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Yogyakarta announced the Gubernatorial Decree on alert status of floods and landslides in the Yogyakarta Special Region following the raining season.

"The emergency alert status will be applicable between December 3, 2013 and February 28, 2014," Head of the Yogyakarta BPBD Gatot Saptadi stated on Wednesday.

The administration announced the alert status following a coordination meeting and technical study on hydrometeorology conducted by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency and the Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

"Apart from floods and landslides, gale and cold lava flooding also occurred in some rivers that disgorge at Mount Merapi," Saptadi said.

Moreover, there is also a potential of abrasion on Yogyakartas south coast, Saptadi added. "People should also anticipate the spread of diseases during the transition period," he stated.

In response to the alert status, the administration, military, and police should be ready with the necessary equipment and human resources to handle the disaster. "A main post has been established in Pusdalop (the agency's center for operations control), Kenari Road, Yogyakarta," Saptadi added.
