Newmont to keep operating until 1st quarter of 2014

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUMBAWA -- One of Indonesia's largest copper and gold mining companies, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) ensures to keep operating despite government's ban on raw mineral export per January 12, 2013. Company will conduct limited operation until May 2014. Processing Manager of Newmont, Ilyas Yamin explained that company still has some obligations against environment around mining areas.

"We cannot close and stop all operational activities on January 12, 2014. It will enter a rainy season during January until May next year and we have to make sure there are no acid mine spilling into river or water," Yamin said recently.

Newmont will continue its activities during next four months until concentrate warehouse is full. Newmont management still proposes work plan and budget expenditure for 2014. The work plan will be sent to Directorate General of Mineral and Coal in Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Thursday this week.

Company submits a production plan of copper, gold and silver that is higher than 2013. The reason, company now has a better mine plan's quality. Company's efficiency and performance also improve in last three years.

To comply the ban on raw mineral export, Newmont plans to send its mine concentrates gradually to local company, PT Smelting Gresik, Indonesia's sole copper smelter in Gresik, East Java.
