Balikpapan asks bride to plant trees

BALIKPAPAN -- Balikpapan City Government of East Kalimantan requires that every bride and groom who wants to be married must plant tree as one of administrative requirements of the marriage. Head of Public Relation of Balikpapan City Government, Sudirman Djajaleksana explained that this policy was part of national movement to plant one billion trees in 2013.

"It will be effective in January 2014," Djajaleksana said on Monday.

Balikpapan City Government will prepare lands where the bridal couple will plant trees. Environmental Agency will help directly in location. Mayor of Balikpapan wants his residents also actively planting and maintaining their trees after seeing condition of Pengendali III Dam in East village, North Balikpapan.

This policy will give full support to community as government has provided plant seeds for couples. It also received a positive response. For the bride and groom, a tree can be a sign of their affection.

In recent years, all Balikpapan residents actively plant trees. All civil servants in government agencies, military, police, students, private sector employees, professionals and lot of expats in Balikpapan do the same. The planting is also sponsored by many companies.
