PMTCT Program to prevent baby's HIV transmission in Jayapura

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SENTANI -- Transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) from mother to baby continues to increase in Jayapura, Papua. In 2012, figure of children under five years who was affected the virus reached 25 cases.

"Until September 2013, the figure has increased to 31 cases," Secretary of Commission of HIV/AIDS in Jayapura, Purnomo said recently.

About 53.7 percent cases were found among women and total of 50.42 percent victims were housewives. Number of cases among children aged 1-4 years also continues to increase from time to time.

There is Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) Program, prevention of mother to child at each health center and hospital in Jayapura. There is also Provider Initiated HIV Testing and Counseling (PITC) Program, counseling and testing for initiation of health workers.
