HIV grabs life of 39 residents in Batam

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATAM -- AIDS Commission in Batam recorded that 39 residents died as they were touched by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It happened during January to August 2013

"They consist of 19 men and 20 women who died because the virus," Board of AIDS Commission in Batam, Kornel Balawanga said recently.

During the period, there were about 6,600 residents went to service center examination of HIV/AIDS at several places, such as Elizabeth hospital, Budi Mulia hospital and Embung Fatimah regional hospital.

After underwent tests, 393 residents suffered HIV positive, consisted of 194 men and 199 women. Meanwhile, 135 residents are positive for AIDS, consist of 63 men and 72 women.

Balawanga estimated that this figure would increase from 524 cases in December last year. At that time, number of people living with HIV in Batam reaches 300 residents.
