Human trafficking in Indramayu is on the rise

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, INDRAMAYU -- Case of human trafficking in Indramayu district was on a rise every year. Local government is set to overcome it.

"The case always increases every year. It is also affected by low level of resident's economic," Regional Assistant II in Indramayu regency, Wahidin said recently.

In 2010, six cases of human trafficking were occurred in Indramayu. Five cases of them were successfully handled and the rest were still in process of full investigation. In 2011, there were nine cases and all of them successfully completed. In 2012, there were 11 cases with eight cases were successfully resolved and three cases are still in process of completion.

Wahidin said that the increasing cases due to mental attitude of some people who wanted to get rich quickly in Indramayu. Dropped out of school children are also vulnerable trafficked. Therefore, they do not understand various ways, which are conducted by traffickers to get them.

"Many victims of human trafficking from Indramayu were sent to Jakarta, Tanjungpinang and Dolly (red light area in Surabaya, East Java). They are also sold abroad," Wahidin said.

Local government has issued some regional laws, such as Law No. 14/2005 on Prevention and Prohibition of Trafficking for Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, also Law No. 18/2012 on Prevention and Recovery Protection of Women and Children as Victims of Violance in Indramayu District.
