REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Supreme Court has handed down a heavier sentence to former beauty queen who is also former Democratic Party politician Angelina Patricia Pingkan Sondakh. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison. She previously sentenced four and a half years for corruption in Ministry of Education and Culture and Ministry of Youth and Sports.
"This defendant actively asked for money or fee from Mindo Rosalina Manulang (MRM) about seven percent of project value, which was agreed to five percent. It have been given to her about 50 percent during budget discussion and 50 percent others after Budget Implementation Checklist (DIPA). She was very active," Chairman of Judge, Artidjo Alkostar said on Thursday.
In this decision, the Council also required Sondakh to give back funds of 12.58 billion IDR and 2,350 billion USD, which she had received before. If she is not paying this, she must be replaced with five years in prison.
Sondakh actively initiated a meeting to introduce MRM to Secretary of Directorate General of Higher Education in Ministry of Education and Culture, Haris Iskandar in order to drive budget in the Ministry.
Woman who familiarly called Angie has been proven legally guilty of corruption by accepting gifts related to her position in the House of Representatives. Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) then proposed an appeal. Vice Chairman of KPK, Bambang Widjojanto appreciated Jakarta High Court, which added punishment for Angie.
"It brings a very clear message to public, especially for corruptors. Do not play with corruption," Widjojanto said.
