REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TERNATE -- Chinese investors expressed interest in investing in coconut shell charcoal and belt industries in North Maluku province at a meeting with Indonesian officials in Beijing recently, a local official said.
Head of the North Maluku Provincial Agriculture Office Gazali Westplat said on Saturday he, along with representatives from eight Indonesian provinces visited China recently at the invitation of the Chinese investor's organization to promote their investment potentials.
More than 150 Chinese investors attended the meeting which took place at the Indonesian embassy in Beijing, he said.
Some of the investors explored the possibility of direct investment at the meeting initiated by the Chinese agriculture ministry, he said.
"They discussed three important points," he said without elaborating.
Gazali said his office was preparing database of the province's investment potentials and studying the possibility of local investors cooperating with their Chinese counterparts.
North Maluku must make preparations for the inflow of Chinese investment in the province, he said adding one of the urgent steps the province must take was providing adequate infrastructure such as seaport.
This was because Chinese ships would directly transport export goods from North Maluku, he said.
The other technical step was coordination between the provincial government and district municipal government in this case the industrial and trade offices and local businessmen engaged in coconut shell charcoal and belts.
