Gas still erupted in Mahakam oil block

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- French oil company, Total E&P Indonesia has not been able to handle gas eruption in TN C414 wells of Mahakam block, Kutai, East Kalimantan. Head Department of Media Relation in Total E&P, Kristanto Hartadi said that the company still investigated the cause of gas eruption.

"Drilling machine maybe hit gas pockets," Hartadi said recently.

On Friday last week, gas eruption happened in TN-C414 wells. It is located in Tunu field, the largest field in Mahakam block. Gas comes from a shallow reservoir with no indications of the existence of condensate. All workers have been saved and evacuated to the nearest accommodation facilities.

Until now, eruption location is still closed to anyone. For security purpose, four meters to the sea, there is not allowed any shipping activity. Two kilometers from eruption location, there are residents areas, but not dangerous and do not need evacuation.

Hartadi said that he did not know when the eruption could be stopped. However, the incident does not disrupt production. The reason, TN-C414 wells are still not yet in production phase. Total E&P Indonesia now produces 800 mmscfd gas of Tunu field out of 1,700 mmscfd of total production in Mahakam block.

This time, the company mobilizes all resources required to mitigate this incident. They also have reported it to authorities. Total E&P also has requested some assistance from its headquarters in France.
