We have to boost investment in Jakarta and in the regions, Yudhoyono says

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on all sides to work hard and help maintain investment climate amid the world's economic slowdown.

"BPS (the central bureau of statistics) has announced that the country's third quarter economic growth was recorded at 5 percent. So, up to the third quarter our economy has grown by 8.5 percent," the President said on his Twitter account on Saturday.

He said that the figure as announced by the BPS had been predicted in accordance with the global economic slowdown.

"We have to constantly boost investment in Jakarta and in the regions. Easy procedures must be given to investors when they attend to business licenses," the head of state said.

The President said that state expenditures by the central and regional governments must also be carried out in time. It should not be late.

In the meantime the State Audit Board (BPK), the Government's Development Finance Comptroller (BPKP) and the Presidential Unit for Development Supervision and Control (UKP4) must continue to supervise the use of state funds.

"We need to consistently maintain the people's purchasing power while assistance for the poor and underprivileged must go on," he stressed.

To support the program, according to the president, employment opportunities must continue to be created. The Smallholders' Credit Scheme (KUR), the National Program for Community Empowerment (PNPM) and infrastructure development programs must also be increased.

"I also call on all governors, district heads and mayors work hard in maintaining economic growth and in creating job opportunities," he said.

The head of state expressed conviction that if all sides carried out their respective tasks well, the national economy would be maintained and avoid the negative impact of global economic crisis which was still taking place now.

In the meantime the Central Board of Statistics (BPS) said on Wednesday that Indonesia's economic growth in quarter 3 (Q3) of 2013 reached 5.62 percent year-on-year, lower than last year's growth rate of 5.81 percent.

BPS Head Suryamin said the Indonesian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Q3 2013 had grown 5.83 percent, cumulatively, compared with the same period in 2012.

"The highest growth is in logistics and communication, with growth of 10.46 percent, followed by real estate and company services at 8.09 percent and construction at 6.24 percent," he stated.

The highest growth last year was in agriculture, farming, forestry, and fisheries with 6.16 percent, followed by construction at 3.35 percent and communication at 3.28 percent.

The processing industry was the highest contributor to growth in the third quarter, with 1.25 percent, followed by the hotel and restaurant sectors, with 1.07 percent; logistics and communication, with 1.05 percent; and finance, real estate, and company services, with 0.77 percent.

Other sectors such as services, 0.52 percent; agriculture, farming, forestry, fisheries, and construction, each 0.41 percent; mining, 0.11 percent; and electricity, gas, and clean water, each 0.03 percent also contributed to the 5.62 percent growth.

On expenditures to the GDP, government consumption contributed 8.83 percent; domestic consumption, 5.48 percent; investment, 4.51 percent; exports, 5.26 percent; and imports, 3.8 percent.
