REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NATUNA -- Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantioro has said Indonesia needs 34 radar installations to support the Air Force in guarding the country's air space.
"So far, the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) has been guarding the aerial territory with the cooperation of commercial flights, and it has run well. However, we still lack 32-34 radar sites throughout Indonesia," the minister said while inspecting an air force exercise in Riaus's Islands on Wednesday.
Based on the first strategic plan (2009-2014), Indonesia will acquire four radar installations worth US$150 million, which will be deployed in eastern Indonesian.
Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Air Force Marshall Ida Bagus Putu Dunia said Indonesia currently has some 20 radar installations placed throughout the country, including in Natuna, Tanjung Pinang and Dumai.
