Chinese Investor to build fish canning in South Kalimantan

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KOTABARU -- Chinese investor was ready to inject its money to develop canning and fishmeal industry in Kotabaru, South Kalimantan. Kotabaru is well-known as the largest fish producing area in Kalimantan.

Regent of Kotabaru, Irhami Ridjani and Head of Department of Fisheries and Marine in Kotabaru, Talib have coordinated so far with Chinese investor to discuss development of the industry.

"I have sent a proposal to Department of Fisheries and Marine to guard investor's plan to make sure the realisation of fish cannery construction," Ridjani said on Friday.

The establishment of this industry, Ridjani added, would provide new added values to the fishermen as it was designated to assist not only in further development of economic acitivies in the area but to elevate local fisherman prosperity. A better fish processing and packaging meant better prices for the fisherman.

Talib did not deny that fishermen in Kotabaru had lack of knowledge about good fisheries and capital management. He was convince this industry would be a great advantage and opportunity for them to upgrade their management capabilities.

Based on local authority's statistical data, Kotabaru in 2010 produced shrimps and fishes up to 47 thousand tons per year. The numbers jumped to 57 thousand tons in 2012. Talib was optimistic the results of marine fisheries production would reach 100 thousand tonns per year by 2015.
