Governors and mayors of ASEAN capitals support ASEAN Communities 2015

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Governors and mayors from Southeast Asian countries (ASEAN) held a meeting in Jakarta, recently and signed an agreement called Jakarta Declaration on Cooperation Among Governments of Capital Cities of ASEAN Member States in 2013.

According to official site of ASEAN, they gathered to deliberate on prospective contributions of the local governments to ASEAN community building processes set for end of 2015. Meeting under the theme “ASEAN Goes Local: Contributing to the ASEAN Community 2015,” these local officials were in Jakarta from 17-19 September 2013.

Indonesia was represented by Governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo. Other participants represented by governors of Bandar Sri Begawan (Brunei Darussalam), Bangkok (Thailand), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Vientiane (Laos). While Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam sent their high officials.  

Jakarta Declaration consists of seven points. First, all participants agreed to play an active role in improving cooperation of ASEAN integration and community building. Second, they commits to implement ASEAN agreements at local government level through cooperation among local governments in ASEAN countries.

Third, they will hold regular meetings in capitals cities of ASEAN countries to exchange ideas. Fourth, they will asked ASEAN Summit in October 2013 to recognize the governors' meeting.

Fifth, they will promote cooperation, such as capacity building training, joint promotion in tourism, improvement of public services, facilities and sister city student exchange. Sixth, they ask ASEAN Secretariat to involve local government to help development improvement. Seventh, they welcome the invitation extended by governor of Bangkok to hold next year's meeting.
