REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, INDRAMAYU - The export demands for batik from northern coast of Java, especially Indramayu regency, West Java, are increasing. One of the country destinations is Japan.

"Many Japanese consumers order natural made batik from Indramayu. They like the patterns," a batik artisan of Indramayu, Murdianto said on Wednesday.

Demand of Indramayu's batik is still quite exciting, both for local and export market, such as to Europe, Japan and Korea.

Another artisan, Kasno said natural dyes and simple pattern could be seen on Paoman batik. Demands from European countries like Spain, Germany and Netherlands are quite high for Paoman pattern. The using of natural dyes for their batik is a tradition inherited from their ancestors. They usually use trees and vegetables to color Indramayu batik.

Use of natural dyes are maintained by craftsmen as a legacy of their ancestors. They are also easy to get color material for this, such as from various trees and vegetables in Indramayu.

"Skills are very important in applying those natural dyes," Kasno said.
