REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Jakarta provincial government is gearing up to impose a special curfew on students across the capital to prevent them from loitering in the city after midnight. "Students are underaged children, and they should not be wandering around at night, especially in the middle of the night or in the early morning. Therefore, we are trying to impose a curfew on students," said Jakarta City Vice Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama at City Hall on Thursday.

Basuki pointed out that many activities are unsuitable for underaged children. "Therefore, there should be a law against underaged kids wandering around at night, so we can keep them from participating in any dangerous or inappropriate activities," stated Basuki.

Currently, the planned curfew for students was still being assessed and further discussion was needed by the Jakarta Education Office, he added. "We have asked the Ministry of Education to finalize the plan. Moreover, we will also invite one or more experts to discuss the curfew," remarked Ahok .

While waiting for the curfew to be implemented, Ahok requested parents to supervise their children`s activities more closely, especially night-time activities. "The parent`s role in overseeing their children, especially at night, is very important. Do not allow your kids to perform any improper activities, such as speeding or loitering in hotels, on road curbs, or in other public places," said Basuki.

Basuki denied suggestions that the curfew plan was related to the recent accident involving the son of Indonesian celebrities and took six lives on Sunday, September 9.

"No, this regulation has nothing to do with the case. This regulation is being considered in the interest of supervising the activities of all students in Jakarta," he confirmed.
