REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla opined that improvement in the quality of education in Indonesia is insignificant as compared to the budget allocated to the sector. According to Kalla, the budget is higher than that for others.

"The question is that despite the budget allocation increasing every year, we have yet to see a significant improvement in the quality of education as compared to that in other countries," Kalla noted in a national dialog on education and culture here on Wednesday.

Kalla drew comparisons between the state budget allocated for education and those set aside for the infrastructure sector. The state budget allocation for education is four folds higher than those for the infrastructure sector.

"The budget for education has reached Rp400 trillion. The Public Works Ministry that has build roads, bridges, and other infrastructure only received some Rp100 trillion. The same also holds true for the budget for defense," Kalla remarked.

As compared to other Southeast Asian countries, Indonesia still lagged behind in terms of the quality of education.

The vice president cited the example of Vietnam that had allocated a budget for the education sector than was 20 percent lower than those for other sectors.

Nonetheless, the country was able to improve the quality of education that is even better than that of Indonesia, Kalla noted.

Kalla has called on all stakeholders to find the best possible solution to improve the quality of education in Indonesia.
