West Java has potential to develop world class geopark

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG - Deputy Governor of West Java, Deddy Mizwar said West Java had geopark which potentially to be world class tourist attraction and benefits to local economy.

"West Java has geopark that can attract tourists, for example in North of Bandung and South of Tasikmalaya," Mizwar said recently.

These region were formed by eruption of Mount Sunda. In North of Bandung, there are Mount Burangrang, Tangkuban, Ciater and Manglayang Hill, while in South of Tasikmalaya, there are rivers, beaches, caves and underwater volcanoes. Mizwar promised to develop all geoparks with state owned companies. 

Among others, geological excursion in Ciletuh, Sukabumi, has potential to entry list of Global Geopark Network (GGN). This is composed of the oldest rocks in West Java, consists of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks aged 50 million to 65 million year old.

Secretary for Geology Agency in Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yun Yunus Kusumabrata said many potential geoparks were not yet developed. If a potential geopark is integrated into integrated package, it will provide high economic value. He mentioned Yuntaishan Geopark in China could boost number of visits nearly tripled from 400 thousand visitors in 2004. 

"Local government must focus on improving development of geopark in this region," Kusumabrata said.
