67,349 inmates get remission on Indonesia's independence day

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Goverment gave remission to 67,349 inmates on Indonesia's Independence Day, August 17, 2013. Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Amir Syamsuddin, symbolically presented the sentence reduction at Tangerang Juvenile Penitentiary, Banten. 

"Remission for youths, Eid al Fitr remission, and parole provided to inmates have been effective to slow down the over capacity problem in penitentiaries," Head of Sub Directorate General Communication, Akbar Hadi Prabowo said in a press release on Saturday. 

There are 65,152 inmates get sentences reduction, but they must spend rest of their sentences, while 2,197 inmates will immediately enjoy their freedom. According to the press release, that number of occupants in prisons throughout Indonesia in August 16, 2013 reaches 159,303 inmates or decrease compared to July 2013 that reached 163,172 inmates.
