REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SAMPANG -- The Sampang district military command in East Java is hoisting a giant red-and-white national flag, measuring 7 by 12 meters, to mark the 72nd anniversary of Indonesian Independence.
The flag is flown from a tower owned by a telecommunication provider on Jaksa Agung Suprapto Street in Sampang at a height of 50 meters.
"The aim of flying this giant flag is to mark the 72nd anniversary of Indonesian Independence, rekindle the spirit of Sampang residents, and remember the services of our national heroes who struggled for national independence 72 years ago," chief of the district military command Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Indrama Bodi stated here on Tuesday.
It took three days and one night to sew the giant flag, he added.
Hopefully, the red-and-white national flag flown from the entrance point of Sampang city would remind the public of the importance of celebrating the Indonesian Independence as a way of thanking God for the independence, he remarked.
"The public must also instill nationalism in the younger generations to respect national heroes," he revealed.
It took nearly 60 minutes, from 08.00 to 09.-00 a.m., for four Army soldiers to hoist the flag.
