REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PONTIANAK - National Narcotics Agency (BNN) estimated total of economic loss due to narcotics charges in Indonesia up to 57 trillion IDR this year. It's based on some indicators such as purchasing value, benefit value, medical expenses and also rehabilitation costs.
"It increases from 32.5 trillion IDR in 2008. The loss also increases 37 percent compared to 2004," Head of Sub Directorate of Non Therapeutic Community at BNN, Mariani said on Saturday.
The number of narcotics abuses in Indonesia has increased and very complex. In 2008, number of abuser reached 3.6 million people or 1.9 percent of total population. The number rised to 3.8 million people in 2011 or 2.2 percent of total population.
Survey cunducted by BNN shows there are 60 thousand inmates or 38 percent of 157 thousand inmates in Indonesia are convicted in drug related crimes. While another impact is the increase of HIV patients caused drug abuse. Death number becaused of drugs is estimated 41 people per day.
