Egypt's interim president swears in new cabinet

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CAIRO - Egypt's interim president is swearing in a new Cabinet, the first since the ouster of the first democratically elected president Mohammed Mursi by the military nearly two weeks ago. The proceedings are being shown live on state TV.

The new government, sworn in Tuesday, is led by Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi, an economist, and features the promotion of Defense Minister Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to deputy prime minister. El- Sissi who ousted Mohammed Mursi on July 3, also retains the defense portfolio.

The Mursi-appointed interior minister, Mohammed Ibrahim, remains in his post, in charge of the police. Nabil Fahmy, who was Egypt's ambassador to the US from 1999-2008, becomes foreign minister.
