Govt to build 372 units of earthquake resistant schools in Aceh

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Ministry of Education and Culture will rebuild 372 schools hit by earthquakes in Central Aceh and Bener Meriah district. All schools will be built with earthquake resistant structures.

"The construction concept will be transformed into earthquake-resistant building. Ideally, if houses are destroyed in a disaster then schools can stand and be used as shelters for refugees, " Minister of Education and Culture, Muhammad Nuh said on Tuesday.

The Ministry has prepared 29 billion IDR for the development. The construction of schools will use the ministry's as well as provincial government’s funds. It will take at least six months to rebuild the education facilities.

Earthquake measured 6.2 on the Richter Scale devastated Central Aceh and Bener Meriah district on July 2, 2013. The earthquake was not only destroy thousands of homes, but also a number of educational facilities. At least, there were 372 schools damaged, and 156 of them were elementary schools.
