40 percent of S. Korean coal imported from Indonesian

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - South Korea imports 400 million tons of coal per year for power plants and 40 percent of it is from Indonesia.

"Half of the coal imported from Indonesia is low rank coal," President of Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER), Jooho Whang said on Wednesday in Jakarta.

KIER and PT Superintending Company of Indonesia (Sucofindo), a reputable state-owned inspection company in Indonesia, signed a memorandum of understanding about Coal Upgrade by Palm Oil (CUPO) for mining industry in Indonesia. At the end of 2013, Indonesia would supply CUPO for Korean power plant.

Commercial Director of Sucofindo, Sufrin Hannan said Indonesia produces 400 million tons of coal per year. As many as 60 percent of it is low rank coal. The cooperation is expected to improve the quality and increase the selling price of coal.
