China: Rival countries must remember history over South China Sea

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia, Liu Jianchao said countries had claims over South China Sea and East China Sea needed to look back at historical facts about territorial issues in the region. Escalation of tension continued over the years and had the potential to burst into an open conflict. 

Liu also urged rival countries of the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC).

"China believes that most of South China Sea region has been controlled under our administration since centuries ago. This also applies to Diayou or Senkaku Island in East China Sea," Jianchao said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Disputes in South China Sea and East China Sea continues to escalate and is feared to burst into an open conflict in Asia Pasific region, while a number of Asian countries also begin to increase its military budget.

In essence, the dispute countries need to look at the history and appreciate it. Jianchao said, beside historical facts in South China Sea, the dispute countries also needed to show commitment about implementation of DOC that had agreed between China and ASEAN countries. Antara/Mutia Ramadhani
