REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The glory of Islam in Indonesia formerly stood in Kotagede, a district in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Kotagede is famous with its silver crafts and witness of the rise of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom that ruled almost the entire Java.
Except Banten and Batavia, Java and Madura was under the reign of Islamic Mataram Kingdom. Sites of Islamic Mataram can be easily found in Kotagede and one of them is 'Pasar Legi' which has been operating since Danang Sutawijaya led Mataram in 1582.
About 100 meters from Pasar Legi, there is Kotagede Mosque which was built in 1640 and painted with Islamic calligraphy. The mosque was builtd under the reign of King of Mataram, Sultan Agung. There are 81 graves of Mataran kings inside the mosque complex.
With 20 thousand IDR ticket, a visitor can enter the graves area. Uniquely, every visitor must wear traditional Javanese clothes which can be rented for 10 thousand IDR per person. Graves area is only open on Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday, from 08.00 until 16.00 Western Indonesian Time.
Kotagede is located one hour drive from Adi Stutjipto Airport. During the visit, do not forget to respect local customs and tradition in Kotagede.
