Akil Mochtar elected as chief justice of Constitutional Court

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Constitutional Judge Akil Mochtar was elected as Chief Justice of Constitutional Court on Wednesday after winning seven of the nine votes in the final round of the Constitutional Court chief election. Mochtar, wins after competing against fellow Constitutional Court Justice Harjono, will replace Mahfud MD whose second term ended on March 31.

After elected Mochtar said that Constitutional Court needed supports from all parties as people had high expectation. "People have bigger expectation for Constitutional Court," Mochtar said on Wednesday.

"In this kind of situation, we have to give people better access to justice," he added.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) welcomes the newly elected chief justice positively, as reiterated by Presidential Spokesman, Julian Aldrin Pasha. Pasha said the president hoped that Mochtar could bring Constitutional Court as a state institution that voiced justice for people.

"We believe that Constitutional Court will be committed to its duty," he said.
