REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NAY PYI TAW - State-owned enterprise, Perum BULOG, seeks stronger cooperation with Myanmar on rice procurement. Indonesia expects to import rice from Myanmar should the stock decrease.

"We plan to import rice from Myanmar to meet our rice demand," Executive Director of Perum BULOG, Sutarto Alimoeso, said on Tuesday while visiting Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, with Coordinating Minister of Economy, Hatta Rajasa, and other state-owned enterprises.

Alimoeso mentioned that the cooperation between Indonesia and Myanmar in rice procurement had been started since 2011 when Indonesia imported 5,600 tonnes of rice due to lack of national production. Myanmar is expected to meet Indonesian demand on rice to maintain national food stability. The high population and limited rice field are also huge challenges for Indonesian government.

"We want G to G (Government to Government) in term of rice procurement cooperation with Myanmar, just like Vietnam and Thailand," he said.
