REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia produces 40 cubics of timber per year. Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan guaranteed that 80 percent of the timber were not from tropical rainforests.

"Despite high production, it does not stage  the tropical rainforests," Hasan said on Monday during Jakarta International Expo.

Furniture and craft industry that uses timber and rattan as main material support Indonesian export. The industry is emerging as a major foreign exchange earner.

Government commits to protect tropical forests by implementing Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK) since March 2013. The timber is certified before it is exported to ensure that Indonesia abide to the law.

SVLK is important for Indonesia to enter international market. Government encourages business major player to put the certification in place. Yet, some businessmen argue that the orocess to gain certificate was costly.
