Minister Wirjawan strong candidate to lead ruling party

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Deputy Secretary General of Democratic Party, Ramadhan Pohan, nominates Minister of Trade Gita Wirjawan as the chairman of Democratic Party. "He is young with clean track record,and also concerns over our national problems," Pohan said on Monday.

Democratic Party will hold a extraordinary congress to determine a new chairman replacing Anas Urbaningrum who stepped down after he was named as a suspect of corruption case. Several other names from both internal and external of the party emerge before the congress.

Pohan said many members accepted Wirjawan due to his good track record in which the criteria needed by the party. 

Besides Wirjawan, he mentioned that the Chief of Army Staff Pramono Edhie Wibowo was also a good figure for the chairman for its ability to communicate with people. However, Wibowo is still attached to his office until May 2013. 

"There are also other names, such as Chief Justice of Constitutional Court Mahfud MD and Minister of Home Affairs Gamawan Fauzi," Pohan said.

Meanwhile, the promising name from the members of Democratic is the Speaker of House of Representatives, Marzuki Alie. "He is a man of action. We have no doubt on his capabilities but how about the House?" he said.
