Japan to support Jakarta's MRT project

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) confirm its support on mass rapid transit (MRT) project in Jakarta. Based on the country's experience, the support will include in feasibility study, design, construction and operational.

"We will support the project," Vice President of JICA, Hiroto Arakawa, said after meeting Deputy of Economic Cooperation and International Financing at the Coordinating Ministry of Economy, Rizal Affandi Lukman, on Tuesday. 

The MRT project costs 144 billion yen, in which government owes 120 billion yen to JICA. The remainings will be financed by state budget and local budget.

For the first stage, JICA will build 15.7 meter corridor connecting Lebak Bulus and HI traffic circle and will be active in 2016. There will be 13 stops and six subway stations. 

The second stage is building a 15.7 meter corridor connecting HI traffic circle and Kampung Bandan. It is expected to be finished in 2018. 

MRT is cosidered as an efficient transportation for a big city such as Jakarta. Affandi Lukman hopes MRT can be a part of the development of integrated transportation system in Jakarta. "By providing the right public transportation, we can reduce the usage of private cars," he said.
