REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) predicts that flood will be increasing in Jakarta next year. Flood factors would always be faster than any effort for flood management, the Chairman of BNPB, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said.

Generally, there are two factors causing flood in Jakarta. They are nature and human factors. He explained that before 1970s, nature became the dominant factor of flood. After that year, human has played a great role. He mentioned that both factors were closely related.

According to BNPB, Jakarta will not be freed from flood. Currently Jakarta has 78 points of flood area. Any effort to control flood until 2014 will not tackle the problem.

The main government program to solve the flood problem, East Flood Canal, can only decrease 15 points. Normalization of river in West Flood Canal will only decrease six points. Other efforts, cost almost 2.3 trillion IDR, will only diminish 10 points.
