REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Chairman of Muhammadiyah, Din Syamsuddin, said the case of widely sold meatball containing pork was worrying as it tricked Muslim to consume forbidden food. Islam forbids its followers to eat pork and alcohol.

"The producers of meatball must realize that they violate Islamic values and they also involve other to cheat," Syamsuddin said on Wednesday.

Furthermore, the pork added to the meatball potentially inflict great losses its sellers. Syamsuddin urged the government to take the case seriously by involving Drug and Food Monitoring Agency (BPOM) to monitor and check the sample of meatball and the slaughterhouse.

He found out that halal label was not effective anymore in Indonesia so the government must take direct approach such as monitoring the market and announcing the result publicly. Syamsuddin also expressed his hope that the House of representative would ratify halal bill soon.
