Indonesia to open regional dialog on Malay culture

Indonesian Ministry of Education & Culture plans to hold a regional dialog on Malay Culture in Pekanbaru, Riau, on December 3-5. Not only Indonesians, the participants also come from Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, and others.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Malays may never forget the famous quote of Hang Tuah, “Tak Melayu hilang di Bumi” which literally means “Malays will never vanish from the world”. The legendary quotation now has inspired The Ministry of Education & Culture to hold a regional dialog on Malay Culture in Pekanbaru, Riau, on December 3-5. 

With “Revitalising the Wisdom of Malay Culture for now and the Future” as the grand theme, the event will consist of dialog on Malay along with Malay cultural performance and exhibition. This event is expected to draw participation from Malay scholars, public figures, historians, art and culture enthusiasts, and artists.

As the Malays and their culture now are scattered in South East Asia Region such as in Riau, Malaysia, Singapore, Sarawak, Brunei & West Kalimantan, this regional dialog will involve some important figures and scholars from Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, and also Singapore and the Philippines .  Meanwhile Indonesia will bring three main speakers namely Tengku Nasaruddin Said Effendy (artist and scholar), Taufik Abdullah (historians) , and Sangkot Marzuki Batubara (scholar).

In the end, this event is expected to draw inputs and strategies to preserve Malay culture and the spirit of togetherness among Malays. “We hope this event will become the bridge on implementing a larger , international scale of the future “Dialog Budaya Melayu” (Cultural Dialog on Malay -Ed) event and its supporting activities,” Deputy Minister of Education & Culture Indonesia,  Wiendu Nuryanti, said in a press release.
