Workers to strike in 14 provinces on September 14

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANJUNG PINANG - Worker strikes in 14 provinces is being planned if the government does not respond to their demand. One of the demands is the governement expected to abolish outsourching system.

"We want the government to abolish the outsourcing system, low wages and corruption," Chairman of Riau islands` Indonesian Metal Workers Federation (FSPMI) Otong Sutisna said on Sunday.

He said FSPMI demanded the government to be firm in implementing Regulation Number 13/2003 about employment status especially the article related to the outsourcing system. Otong mentioned thousands of workers in Riau island were still working under the outsourcing system.

Otong explained the strike will be done nationally next September 14 in 14 provinces. As in Riau islands itself, he added, the strike will be centered in Batam, Bintan and Karimun area. About 20,000 workers are expected to join the strike.
