Kalla leads Indonesian Red Cross to Rohingya

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Jusuf Kalla will lead Indonesian Red Cross to assist Rohingya people. The team will depart on Friday.

"We will depart tomorrow (Friday -Ed)," the Chairman of Indonesian Red Cross Jusuf Kalla said at the Ministry of Health on Thursday.

The team consists of 10 people, but Kalla did not mention the detail of the aid for Rohingya. Earlier Kalla said that he would send humanitarian aid after Indonesian Red Cross and Southeast Asia countries agreed the plan. Kalla also asked President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to build diplomatic approach towards Myanmar government through ASEAN forum.

Prosperous Justice party (PKS) suggested Kalla and former speaker of people's consultative assembly (MPR) Hidayat Nur Wahid to mediate the Myanmar’s conflict. The Deputy Chairman of PKS faction in the House of Representatives Almuzzammil Yusuf said both figures were known as moderate Muslims and experts on negotiation. 

"We expect Kalla to represent Indonesia in negotiating with Myanmar government, while Hidayat can talk to Myanmar parliament, ASEAN, and OIC to cooperate in conflict settlement," he said.
