Lawmaker: Kalla is a perfect mediator for Rohingya crisis

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The former Indonesian vice president, Jusuf Kalla would be a perfect candidate to mediate Rohingya crisis, said a member of Commission I in House of Representatives, Al Muzzammil Yusuf, on Tuesday. Yusuf cited Kalla’s success story in mediating conflict in Aceh and Poso.

"It is better if government appoints him as Indonesia’s official envoy," Yusuf said.

Earlier on August 3, Kalla was the keynote speaker on the discussion held by Organization for Islamic conference (OIC). JK delivered his ideas on the settlement of Rohingya conflict, which emphasizing the humanitarian side.

"Government must seek support from ASEAN and Myanmar. But, it should not close parliament, public, and organization's role to participate in giving the solution," Kalla said then.

According to the last report, 650 out of a million Muslim Rohingya died during the clash in Rakhine, Myanmar. About other 1,200 are disappeared and 90,000 are displaced. Myanmar calls Rohingya as illegal immigrant even though they have lived in the country for several generations.
