US to build a new ‘friendly’ embassy in Jakarta

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - US Embassy in Indonesia will build a new open and transparent office worth 4.2 trillion IDR, according to US Ambassador to Indonesia Scot Marciel. He said the soon-to-be environmental friendly building was a US commitment of partnership to Indonesia.

The building is still located at Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta and reconstructed the old building. He claims that the new office will be more open to people who apply for Visa.

The construction of this 10-story building, he continued, needed at least 5,000 Indonesian workers and some architects and development planners from both countries. Thus, he opens the job opportunity for people to fill the position.

The Director of the Project, Tamela Simpson said several American architects were involved in this project. The team has visited Indonesia several times on the last five years to consult with Indonesian experts.

"Apart from the latest technology, the new embassy will be decorated with Indonesian traditional textile," Simpson said.

The old concrete wall of this building will be converted into glass wall with sunscreen. It will also has rainwater receiver, bio-retention, porous road pavements, and solar panels.

This 36,000 meter square office will hold the staff of US embassy and US mission to ASEAN. Certified with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, the building will have parking spaces, supporting rooms, waiting room for counselor, three gates, and the restoration of historical building, which is the office of the former Indonesian Prime Minister Sutan Syahrir.
