Kao Gulf in North Halmahera, North Maluku, now has an underwater museum devoted for the World War II (WW II). Visitor can see the heritage from the WWII, such as abandoned war ship, wreckage of fighter aircraft, bombs, and mine, spread in dozens points ranging from 3-10 meter depth. Those belong to Japan and the allies.
On the World War II in 1945, the Kao Gulf was a battle field between Japan and the allies. The region was a Japan security base in Halmahera. People still can see its fortress, bunker, and airfield.
Many domestic and foreign visitors came to the museum following the promotion from the local government, the Head of Culture and Tourism Department in North Halmahera, J Papilaya, said.
"This underwater Museum in Kao Gulf is the main attraction for tourists and the attendees of Sail Morotai next September," Papilaya said.
Other fascinating tourism objects in North Halmahera are also related to marine tourism and underwater panorama, such as Kakara Beach. The region also offers culture tourism object like Hibua Lamo traditional house.
