Pontianak to host ASEAN Quran reading competition

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PONTIANAK - The West Kalimantan Provincial Capital of Pontianak is ready to host ASEAN Quran Reading Competition (MTQ) in July 2012. "As the host of the event, we are ready to prepare the accommodation, transportation, and other supporting facilities for the Qoran readers from ASEAN countries," Pontianak Deputy Mayor Paryadi said on Friday.

He explained that the ASEAN Quran Reading Competition would be held in Pontianak city but the management was the responsibility of the provincial government and the organizing committee.

"In principle we will only prepare the supporting facility and infrastructure that have been available here but the rest will be managed by the organizing committee and the provincial government," Paryadi said.

Meanwhile, West Kalimantan branch of Nahdlatul Ulama Chairman, Muhammad Zeet Hamdy Assovie, said the event would be conducted on July 3-8, 2012. "Preparation for the event is now almost ripe," Assovie said, adding that the central committee for the Quran reading competition at ASEAN level would be from Nahdlatul Ulama Central Executive Board.

According to him, the event would be participated in by Quran readers from all ASEAN member states -Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
