REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Conservation Center of Natural Resources in Central Kalimantan and the Center of Orangutan Reintroduction Nyarumenteng evacuated 221 orangutans due to deforestation by palm plantation industry.

"The team also documented the victim of violence over orangutan done by the staff of the company, contractor, and people," the member of Center Orangutan Protection (COP), Hardi Baktiantoro, said.

It is irony that the orangutan, which is the protected animal in Indonesia, is buried alive, burned, or hit until death by irresponsible people."Katingan River in East Kalimantan is the habitat of 1,600-2,000 orangutans. They need to be saved to prevent the extinction," he said.

Unfortunately, Indonesia has not yet had the accurate data on the number of orangutan population in the country. Some Non Governmental Organizations, he said, were conducting some research about the population.
