Equatorial Expedition Team catch sea turtle thieves

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SAMBAS - The Equatorial Expedition team caught seven thieves of sea turtle on Saturday morning. Seven of them were taking sea turtles and their eggs in Camar Bulan Beach, Temajuk, Paloh, Sambas, West Kalimantan.

The team successfully thwarted the thieves’ plan after two-day observation. Seven of them are from Cermai, Sebubus, and Camar Bulan in Sambas, West Kalimantan. The thieves then escorted before local people. "This is to give them a lesson," Commander Cosmos Z said.

Cosmos said the thief would be given firm punishment after share information on sea turtle's eggs to local people. "If another thief is caught after socialization, we will give them to police," he said. Major Poltak A Simbolon said the team would train 27 members of people to protect sea turtle. "So that they can prevent sea turtle and eggs stealing occure," Poltak said.

The Officer of West and Central Coordinator of Equatorial Expedition Team, Fitri Taufiq Sahary, said West Kalimantan had three endemic sea turtles. They are leather-back turtle, green turtle, and hawksbill turtle. Leather-back turtle is now extinct. And hawksbill turtle is considered as endangered animal. "The thief will be punished firmly. This is the proof of team's seriousness," Fitri said.
