REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the violence in Syria, OIC Secretary General, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, said. "We condemn the massacre in Syria. It must be stopped," he said in the first conference of OIC -Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission/IPHRC), opened on Monday (20/2).

OIC asks Syrian government to hold a dialogue with opposition party and build democracy in Syria. OIC always support the decision made by Arab League and United Nations. "We have delivered our voice. We hope they will do it immediately," he said.

Syrian tragedy is a human right critical issue. He hopes the conference can tackle the human right problem in Islamic and other countries. "We have to be a witness to maximize this commission. It is to update and talk about inactive Cairo declaration," he added.

At least 21 are dead in the protest by Syrian oppositions against Bashar al-Assad regime on last Saturday. The UN organization on Human Rights says at least 5,400 civilian and 2,000 army personnel are dead in the Syrian uprising. Meanwhile, China has urged both sides to conduct political dialogue and hold referendum on February 26 followed by multi-party general election to solve the crisis.
